It really gets funny when you fall in with people who are all like that. Instead of Insane Outcast, you'll suddenly be one of the crowd, and you will be judged not by standing out (because you don't, any more) or fitting in (because that sort of people is above such concerns), but by the quality of your output, be it in converstation or actual artistic-type work.

Oh, nobody actually starves, people just have very little money. We have to buy things cheap and so on. But enough for the Internet, in any case; we have a house network that has something like eight different people on it, sharing one common or garden DSL line. Works extremely well. I am always online, for peanuts. I can really work with that.

Being in a proper city and not needing a car helps, of course.

Yes. We do have day jobs. I'm half a network administrator & database tamer, for example, in order to keep the rent paid for the rest of myself that writes and translates and discusses and dredges the meme pool and generally lazes about. The RPG has eaten large protions of my brain at the moment, but I don't really worry on that account.

And two of our three painters in the house actually do rather well for themselves. The third, whom I think the most brilliant and original of them (and not only because she's a very good friend) is struggling a bit with herself about her saleability, and thus a bit hard off at the moment. She paints soft misty abstract pictures that look almost but not quite like misty, mysterious landscapes or fields of flowers that the mind completes and makes sense of.

She gave me one that can be turned 180 degrees - in one direction, it is a large lake with low mountains on the other shore (Lake Balaton in Hungary, for me), and if you turn it around, it is a sea-scape with dunes, the sea, and the mere ghost of a distant headland - I didn't know where I thought that was, but recently decided that it doesn't show any real Roundworld place, but the Circle Sea near Holy Wood...

I put that picture up in my office at my day job because I think people need to see her work. Perhaps I should put it on the scanner as well - it's small enough for that.

Heh. It's a Canadian show for very small children, like Sesame Street or something, with puppets and live children and so forth. It seems to be a pretty universal staple in French education in America and Monsieur Ananas is eminently recognizable in that area. He's more or less the star, because who remembers the two kiddies? and is a pineapple. Poor Monsieur Ananas is very suppressed, unfortunately, and is forever being told that pineapples don't dance/sing/parachute out of planes/etc.
