Sep. 17th, 2005 04:19 amFor fans of HanaKimi-- the official interview with Hara Akiha, translated by moi. There's a lot of stuff about Umeda-sensei in there! <3
Interviewer: (hereafter I) Our second guest is HanaKimi’s Hara Akiha-san. Konnichiwa.
Hara Akiha: (hereafter Hara) Konnichiwa-!
I: Photographer, lover of sweet things, some kind of relationship with Umeda-sensei-- these are Hara-san’s keywords. Therefore, the content of the questions will also focus around these things, but first, the things connected with your occupation as a photographer. “When did you first encounter photography?” “The first time you decided to become a photographer?”
Hara: N~n, but the time I first encountered photography and first aimed to become a photographer were the same. When I was in Middle School, I happened to notice the poster ad for a photo exhibition and it snatched my heart away completely. And, when I went to that photo exhibition, my soul was snatched away completely. It was a person called Robert Mapplethorpe’s “Flower” exhibition.
I: “Is there a photographer you respect?” “Have you been photographing people since the beginning? Do you start photographing from the scenery, or…?” “What do you like as a photograph motif?”
Hara: Mapplethorpe, obviously. But if it’s just who I like, there are heaps of others, too. In the beginning, I was copying him and taking photos of flowers. But I was still a kid, and I was impatient, so I thought that if you just pointed the camera, you could take a photo. Because of that, whatever I took, the only “Flower” was “Flower”. I couldn’t take them like him however hard I tried. But eventually, I came to understand what kind of thing taking photos is. But still, even now I like taking “Flower”.
I: Even your ex-wife Ebi Kotobuki-san has a nude collection she has modelled for displayed. “What kind of things fascinate you about nude photos?” I get the feeling that it leads to the way Hara-san sees people, but…
Hara: Nudes, well, they’re beautiful enough as they are. Whether they’re glamorous or slender or muscular or scarred, they’re attractive. But maybe if you say you can see something you call human nature or the human way of life, that’s an exaggeration.
I: I see. Next, if we’re speaking with Hara-san, you like sweet things! I think we can’t forget that either, but surprisingly, there were only a few questions about that. “Since when have you liked sweet things?” “Doesn’t eating such sweet things lie heavy in your stomach?” … *laugh* Sweet things aren’t really my specialty, so whenever I look at Hara-san’s splendid snacks, I think “wow”.
Hara: I’ve been in the sugary taste party for as long as I’m aware. My stomach is fi~ne.
I: “Is there a cake shop you’d recommend?” Or any other menus you would recommend… is there anywhere Hara-san has previously eaten that was really delicious and so on?
Hara: Right, well first, Café Vienna’s sachertorte, then Brookbond House’s apple tart, and Bewley’s Café’s bound fruitcake, Angelina’s Mont Blanc and Shirotae’s cream-filled pastry you can’t go past either, and Boul’Mich’s chocolate classic makes me happy too, and the taste of Le Blanc’s firmly made French pastry is pretty good, and Afternoon Tea’s scones and banana cake are also good. There’s nothing like that light whipped cre~am. Ah, Toraya’s sweet bean jelly and Tops’ chocolate cake are high standard. A recent hit, I don’t remember the name, but I ate kakigouri and honey with an ugisu mochi at a sweet shop I went to in Kyoto for work, and it was delicious. The ice wasn’t crunchy, it was like the texture of powdered snow, and it was the be~st.
I: As expected, very detailed. I didn’t understand at all. *sweatdrop* At the moment (November 2001), there’s a drama where sweets often appear on screen, and perhaps you watch it, Hara-san?! As a lover of sweets doesn’t this concern you?
Hara: Ah, I watch it, I watch it! I’m not really one for watching dramas, but the cakes look so delicious, so against my better judgement I got hooked watching it.
I: I se~e. But, for someone who eats so much delicious-looking food, your figure is really good. Now, please move on from the way of sugary tastes. *laugh* Now, now, while we’re on the topic of things you like, by all appearances you love Umeda-sensei. I have a lot of questions about that.
Hara: Yes yes? Wha~at?
I: Hm, first. You graduated from the same high school, but were your student years different? “How did you get to know each other? Club activities, or what?” “What is it you like about Umeda-sensei? Of course it’s his face, right?” It’s interesting that everyone says “of course it’s his face, right?”. Of course, they say… *laugh* After that, “did you like him when you were at high school?”
Hara: Ha ha ha… *bitter smile* “Of course”, that’s so horrible. Well, at first I was attracted by his face. But that’s looks. Ordinary. When you first meet someone, isn’t the first thing you see their face? So isn’t the first impression decided by their face and expression? That’s what it’s like in my case, anyway. The first time I met sempai was the entrance ceremony. Sempai says he doesn’t remember, but I remember clearly. Sempai was involved with supervising the new students, and there were other students supervising, but they didn’t draw my eyes the same way; from just that the atmosphere was already different, my gaze had already gone there naturally. Just like that, sempai had a hold of me, excelled and stood out. I wasn’t really looking that much, but of course sempai noticed and glared terribly. That was the first time we met. After that, though, because I stuck close behind sempai, he was pretty depressed, ahahahaha! Eh? Is that what I like? Well, yeah, of course I like that. Because he’s very good looking, sempai.
I: With that Umeda-sensei, “what kind of dates do you go on?” “It looks like you go over to his house to visit, but how do the two of you pass the time at home?”
Hara: Ahaha, mostly I drag him around. Besides, I don’t have a place of residence at the moment. See, because I often go overseas for work, I’m out of Japan a lot of the time, aren’t I? So actually I’m always staying at hotels. Because I was irresponsible and uneconomic (after splitting up with Kotobuki), though, I didn’t look for an apartment straight away. Because of that, it’s always me who goes over to sempai’s house. Whatever you say, that’s troublesome to sempai, so I take him out on dates. At home, we don’t do anything out of the ordinary. We watch movies I bring over, that kind of thing.
I: You often come to visit him at the Ohsaka school health room, don’t you? “Is your job okay? Aren’t you busy?” And after that, when Mizuki comes to the health room while you’re there, things seem to be getting better, but “before Mizuki comes, what are the two of you talking about?”
Hara: Exa~ctly, I go to visit when I don’t have work to do, so it’s okay! I enjoy drinking tea with sempai talking about nothing in particular. (Author’s note: Akiha’s “no work to do” also seem to include break time during work.)
I: You manage a tight schedule, apparently. Because of that, it seems you have a photo of Umeda-sensei, but “what kind of emotion is the photo that you carry, and how many photos do you have total?”
Hara: N~n, well, I haven’t counted so I don’t know. If it’s sempai, he won’t look this way when I’m pointing a camera at him; if I don’t aim for when he’s had alcohol to drink and he’s in a good mood, he won’t let me take them. So there are a lot taken by stealth. *laugh* His face when he sleeps, and… well, if I tell you any more, sempai will never talk to me again, so that’s all!
I: It seems you go through considerable trouble to take those photos. Now, there’s a product Ohsaka students modelled for, but “have you ever thought, I want to use Umeda-sensei as a model!” Also, out of the four you used as models this time, “which did you like the best?”
Hara: Because I’ve decided not to bring personal feelings into work. With how much I love sempai, that’s that. The kid I liked the most from when they modelled? Hm, definitely Sano-kun. Because he doesn’t look like he’ll change with age.
I: Really? Because Sano-kun is an easily handled model, he felt some kind of emotion. Moreover, did you ask “am I gay?” because you feel you love Umeda-sensei too much? But there’s also a question saying “don’t you also like Mizuki, who you know is a girl?” “Which have you dated more up until now, men or women?”
Hara: Ah-hahaha~ *bitter smile* I’m not gay, call me bisexual. Mizuki-kun? She’s cute, but like? Comparing the number of men to women I’ve dated until now, hm, 3:7, women.
I: Speaking of Mizuki, “Even though you knew she was a girl, why didn’t you pursue it?” “It looks like you’ve noticed Sano and Mizuki’s feelings for each other, but are you aware that Sano knows Mizuki is a girl?”
Hara: Because, there are all kinds of people. It’s circumstances. If you just measure things by your own scale, then your outlook is too narrow. I think you have to have enough room for you to be how you are and people to be how they are. Having a style is good, but if you’re too stubborn about it and always stick to it, you’re a frog in a well. Saying it is troublesome, but it’s just quick to say, “people are people”. Because of that, though, I wouldn’t really tell about what Mizuki-kun’s doing. Did I know about Sano-kun? He~h. Yeah, I did. Ahahaha, because even when I’m only sort of near Mizuki-kun, he glares at me with this really scary expression, as if he’s a knight protecting the princess. That’s how I knew she was a girl. It wasn’t the feeling of a guy protecting someone he likes and is already close to. Beyond that, it was the feeling that they were hiding something. So I said, aah, so that’s how it is.
I: Um, this is a little hard to ask, but… about Ebi Kotobuki-san. Of course, we’ll keep it to things you can answer. First, could you please tell us about “your first meeting”? And then “did you have a wedding ceremony? Or didn’t you? If you did, what did it feel like?” “The moment you decided to marry her.”
Hara: When we met, it was on a job-- we met as model and photographer. We didn’t have a wedding ceremony. Because neither of us really cared. But we did have a private party, and just invited close friends. When I decided to marry her, that was because I loved her. *laugh* Because I’m selfish, I can’t stay near someone I dislike even a little for five minutes. But near Kotobuki, I could breathe easily, and I thought, if it were her maybe she’d always stay near me.
I: It’s a fairly intrusive question, but “why did you split up with her even though you loved her?” “Would you consider trying again?”
Hara: Ahaha, *bitter laugh* that’s the way adults are.
I: Oh, I see. A problem like this is the problem of those concerned, and it’s not something others can understand. I think that concludes the future you two thought through thoroughly, so moving on… However, now you work together as friends. “How do you think of Ebi-san?” “Do you love her even now?”
Hara: Yeah, I love her a lot, even now. She’s a complete workaholic, as always. Probably there’ll never be another girl inside of me more important than Kotobuki.
I: Is that right? I’m anticipating what the two of you do after this. Now, finally, Hara-san-- you keep your hair long. “Why do keep it long?”
Hara: Ah, there’s no real reason for that, somehow. When I touch the camera, though, I tie it all back for comfort.
I: I think the individuality of it suits you. Well, please stick with us to continue the interview.
Hara: Sure thing!

Date: 2005-09-16 07:58 pm (UTC)I think I have just nearly squeed myself into unconsciousness at that part. Because, yes, I think he really, genuinely, truly loved her and that she was so incredibly good for him and just... *flaps hands uselessly* I'll be more coherent when I wake up, I just had to squee over that immediately. ♥
And, yes, I quite did notice that he said 'another girl', not 'another person'? >D

Date: 2005-09-18 01:49 am (UTC)I love that Akiha spends an entire paragraph discussing all the different places and sweet things he likes to eat (at), which makes a lot of sense for his character, but I love the way it ties into a) places he can take Sempai on a date to and b) makes sense that he would have to eat at all those places if he doesn't have an apartment/place to bring groceries back to, both of which are mentioned later in the interview. (Though, man, no wonder Sempai is pissy so often, how would you like to be constantly dragged off to go try some new disgustingly sweet dessert and then have the idiot trying to feed you in public again? ^_~)
I like that, for all that he's a little philosophical in places, he doesn't really have his head in the clouds too much, he sees a connection in that moment right before he takes a picture, but he also knows that that's not everything about the human condition or the human way of life. He just strikes me as... not being a shallow stereotype. (Also, omg, he watches ANTIQUE, that's just the cutest thing EVER. ♥)
I love this. LOVE THIS. I love the way Sempai attracted his gaze immediately, his budding photography instincts likely kicking in and demanding he notice this particular person, that there's something special here. But I also love it for the way Akiha describes it, the way you can practically feel time slowing down or the rest of the world melting away as he gazes at that one particular person, the way he says even the atmosphere was already different. How very... shoujo. <3 I still maintain that the only thing missing were sakura petals swirling around them. ^_~
Whatever you say, that’s troublesome to sempai, so I take him out on dates. At home, we don’t do anything out of the ordinary. We watch movies I bring over, that kind of thing.
He's so cute that he feels it's troublesome, so he takes Sempai out on dates to make up for it. And that they're so... domestic. I love that you get the impression that Umeda really does seem a lot more fine with Akiha being around when it's just the two of them, when they're doing calmer things like watching movies or drinking tea/talking. (I still boggle that Blade Runner is one of Umeda's favorite movies.)
His face when he sleeps, and… well, if I tell you any more, sempai will never talk to me again, so that’s all!
I swear... he wants us to think dirty things! :O!
Because I’ve decided not to bring personal feelings into work. With how much I love sempai, that’s that.
I do love that Akiha recognizes that he's lost his objectivity with Umeda, that mixing the person he loves so much with his work (that he's very competant at), there would be a clash. It's interesting that he still works fine with Ebi, can still be strict with her when he needs to be, can still hold back while someone is harsh on her, but knows that he couldn't do the same with Umeda anymore.
Also, for all that I find it interesting that Umeda is very direct and accepting about his feelings, the same is true of Akiha. He's honest with himself in a lot of ways (though, not as honest as Umeda, if Ebi's comment about how he's probably not really aware of the last hurdle/barrier around his heart is true), that he knows he loves Sempai enough not to be able to be objective with him. Which you would need if you were trying to take a good photo of them.
Yet, he mentions above that he does still take photos of him, practically follows him around like a puppy, which is omg so cute.

Date: 2005-09-18 01:49 am (UTC)Because I’m selfish, I can’t stay near someone I dislike even a little for five minutes.
You know, this is interesting. And... I don't think that Akiha dislikes Kijima, but it does make me wonder if they might not get along, that their outlooks on life are just too different, I wonder if they could even stay in the same room together for very long. Aside from the tremendous awkwardness of just how Umeda would act.
But near Kotobuki, I could breathe easily, and I thought, if it were her maybe she’d always stay near me.
I also find this interesting, I definitely got the same sense off of Akiha, that Ebi settled him in a way he really needed at that time of his life. Even today, she's important to him, as well as that she's still there, even after they split up. I imagine, with the way his mother took off, it was important for her to stick around and continue to be in his life, even if they weren't married.
Also, I think it's interesting because, after he's found a relationship where he could 'breathe easily', I doubt that he would ever settle for anything less than that again. Which I do get the sense of him when he's around Umeda and they're having one of those serious moments. Like, when he watches Sempai sleeping... I really get a sense of content off him, genuine content.
