May. 5th, 2006 07:18 pmToday Mari and I went out on a date to watch Ice Age II, which was fun. Great movie. We bought green M&Ms from Big W (yeah, uh, it's a long story) and I also bought Hat Full of Sky and Wee Free Men from the children's books section.
And, because this needs to be shared: Mari and I are the kind of geeky fangirls that after 11 years of friendship, we can still spend 5 hours on the phone (10.30pm-3.30am) talking about various video games, manga and cd dramas. In the process of this, we were talking about Final Fantasy characters, and their relationships, which led to us comparing all of them, and we've come up with labels for each of them, starting from FF4 (look, neither of us played 3, 1 has NO SET CHARACTERS with, like, personalities and 2 isn't much better). With explanations!
NB: By XII, I mean 12. Not 10-2.
FFIV: The Threesome FF
Rosa, Cecil, Kain. Need I say more? Also, from what I recall, fandom has a weakness for Edward/Rydia, Edge/Rydia, and Edge/Edward, which one could fairly easily combine into Edge/Edward/Rydia. Hence: the threesome game.
FFV: The Non-Romantic FF
You have five people on your team total, four at any one time. These people are Bartz, your generic main character hero type; Lena, princess and love interest; Farrah? something like that, crossdressing female pirate; Garland, 50 year old man; and Carla, young girl. Like 12, maybe. The point is, Lena is the love interest, but the game doesn't really push the romance and you can't ship anyone else except for Bartz and Farrah, but it doesn't really push that at all.
FFVI: The Mix-and-Match FF
Your team has 14 characters on it, making it the most populated of all the FFs. Plus, out of the main, say, 6 (Edgar, Locke, Terra, Celes, Setzer, Sabin), there are a lot of possibilities for fandom to act on. There are obviously some relationships the game is more oriented towards, but there's enough ambiguity and hints that one could choose to cross ship, whether other het pairs or yuri/yaoi pairs.
FFVII: The Harem FF
Everyone is in love with Cloud either canonically or so blatantly it may as well be canonically. Even if they're not, they're pretty and fandom can still infer it! Turks may or may not have their own separate harem, we are undecided.
FFVIII: The Soap-Opera FF
You know it's true. The whole flavour of the relationships in this game, canon and fanon, is a soap opera. :D
FFIX: The Faerie-Tale Romance FF
The princess and the thief. Classic faerie-tale romance, where they are so clearly meant to be that there is actually very little need to resort to fandom. In the background, Steiner and Beatrice-- the two protectors, the leader of the men and the leader of the women, etc. Again, very faerie-tale.
FFX: The Angsty Romance FF
I still haven't played it, to be honest, but I'm spoilered for the ending. Also, Mari assures me this is so.
FFXI: Who knows, who cares?
Neither of us have played it. Neither of us have any desire to play it. Does it even have set characters?
FFXII: Undecided
Mari played the beginning once when she was over, but I'm the only one who has played it substantially. I think I'm over halfway through-- it's very short for FF. Undecided refers both to the fact that it's hard to judge without finishing it or at least getting further, and to the fact that the impression I'm getting so far is that it's going to be rather ambiguous. You CAN read romantic feelings in certain pairs that is probably meant to be there, and you can read romantic feelings where it's not supposed to be there, but so far there hasn't been anything overt to suggest people ending up as couples in canon.
Also, I watched episodes 2x20 and 2x21 of House tonight. Very awesome, liked Cameron a lot in them, and also House, even though half the time I was even more incredulous than usual at the outrageous things he was doing.
Account has expired. Sod! Oh well.
And now, I go off to play Tales of Destiny. Oh Stahn! You are so adorable! ♥

Date: 2006-05-20 06:49 am (UTC)I think the last ep of the season is next week? I can maybe burn the rest of the season off for you when it's done. Although it's probably best to wait until after the exams.
