Hello, internet, I am still alive, although this was a near thing!

Well, okay, so maybe I wasn't REALLY dying, but I certainly felt like I was. Explanations are presumably in order-- parents returned from Fiji last Sunday (there's this post, right, that I've been meaning to make since then. it's sitting in SEmagic, complete with a mid-post interruption of OH FUCK I FORGOT MY WASHING or somesuch), and on Monday dad came down with the really nasty form of gastro going around at the moment. Mum got it Wednesday night, and a lot of pains were taken to make sure I didn't get infected, because the whole not being able to eat thing is a big problem with diabetes.

So I thought I was perfectly fine, and Saturday night I was over at Mari's. Then at midnight, I started throwing up. I know, I know, icky TMI, but you can skip this bit if you like. After the first time I called mum; I still wasn't sure if I'd just eaten something that disagreed with me or if it was what she and dad had. Drank some water. Almost fainted from low blood pressure before throwing the water up. Threw up stomach acid at least once an hour until 8.30, meaning neither Mari nor I got much sleep at all. Called mum in the morning to ask her to make a fit in appointment with my GP (which is where I work, also). She picked me up at about 10.20 (about 10 minutes after I threw up the water I'd tried to drink) and drove me straight to the doctors. Note I hadn't had any insulin since the night before because I was afraid of having a hypo and not being able to hold down any sugar to treat it.

Note also sugars run higher when you're sick.

When I got to the doctors, my blood sugar was 18, and I had large ketones (acidic, diabetes-related, if there's too many ketones you can develop ketoacidosis and have multiple organ failure) as well as the low blood pressure and other gastro symptoms. So after he called the diabetes specialist on-call, the doctor sent me to the Canberra Hospital, where I felt very sick and had to wait around for ages before they hooked me up to a liquid drip and even later (it was like 2pm) to an insulin drip while my mum kept freaking out and getting angry at them for not being quicker.

It was really busy though, I can't blame them. There was a guy in casualty who had to be held down and sedated.

Anyway, then we got me transferred to John James with my private health cover, I got strapped into a wheely bed and put in an ambulance, and I got a nice quiet room to stay in without crying babies or guys going psycho. Yay! If I had to be stuck in hospital, at least John James is a nice hospital to be stuck in.

In conclusion: I have emerged from three mostly sleepless nights, two spent in hospital. I have amazingly bad veins that have been poked with needles very many times and the needles they use to put IV drips in are THE DEVIL, but at least I can eat again. I have spent a lot of time playing Big Brain Academy on my Nintendo DS and bumming around watching tv, and I even did my international law reading for this week. I feel bad about missing classes. I'm not sure if I feel bad enough to actually try going back this week, however. We shall see.

So, flist, that's where I'VE been. Have I missed anything? (I did skim LJ, but I might have missed something.)

Gah! That sounds horrible and painful. >.<

Glad to see you're getting somewhat better - for a given value of better, anyway! *hugs*

It was, rather, but I'm mostly better now. <3 I hope it doesn't come anywhere near Melbourne, it's apparently been circling Canberra for a few months now.

Fuck. That stuff went through Curtin Medical Centre, where my mum works, two months ago. It made her very icky, and I was glad I was staying with Tom at the time.

*hug*

I'm happy that you can eat / not die now. Many, many hugs!

Yeah, I at least got over it quicker because of the drip. Reminding myself of that makes me less bothered about the bruise on my hand. XD

Thanks, Ros! ♥

Thanks, Bryony-- I'm a lot better now. Be careful not to catch it, apparently it's been going around Canberra about 4 months now and it's nasty even if you're not a diabetic.
