tammaiyaI'm going to talk about non-fandom stuff later, but for now, more on SGA. Yes, I'm sure you're all thrilled. Anyway, I've watched up to 2x0... 7, I think. Instinct. And I have two things to say, one being episode specific and the other being fandom specific. Oh, wait, no, three things.
First of all, the episode-- Trinity. I kind of thought that was really unfair. Yes, Rodney deserved Elizabeth yelling at him, and Zelenka especially had the right to be pissed off at him (not that we saw that, but... okay, he was arrogant. He made a mistake and almost killed himself and John because he was so sure that he couldn't be wrong. He blew up most of a solar system as a result. But it was an uninhabited solar system; no one died. I can understand John being upset, particularly when he'd trusted Rodney's assurances over his own gut feeling, but the whole betrayed trust thing... I mean, Rodney fucked up, and he apologised for fucking up. He's not the only one to make dumb arrogant mistakes. What about John and the retrovirus? I mean, from the slight spoilers I'd encountered in fic, I was expecting Rodney to do something really bad involving selfish deception and people dying, not arrogant fuck ups.
On the bright side, that episode was kind of shippy, with Rodney asking John to trust him and John going with it. And even how pissed off John was when Rodney was wrong, I guess, cause it shows how much faith John had in him that he'd feel betrayed when Rodney doesn't meet his expectations. Also, in my experience, you don't react like that to someone that much for something like that (avoiding them, giving them the cold smackdown) unless you care enough for them to be able to really hurt you.
Anyway.
To stick to canon for the moment, the thing I thought of as an afterthought was that it's hard to get used to how much happens off-screen in SGA. This is a combination of reading fic first and also of not usually watching Western tv; I'm constantly surprised that we don't find out how Rodney and John spent their time on Earth or John assembling his team or so on. (Now that I think about it, a lot of these gaps relate to Rodney. Huh.) This is kind of good and bad at the same time, because it means some things feel neglected in canon but also gives fanfiction a lot more room to work. If canon shows you every moment of everything important, it's harder to work within it.
Now, shifting more toward fandom: why are all the time-travelling secret past of prostitution fics about Rodney? Well, okay, maybe I've only seen 2 so far, but they were both about Rodney, which strikes me as odd when you consider that John is the one who flirts with everything up to and including inert objects. Also, he's reckless and breaks rules. Rodney strikes me as the kind of person who would think it was idiotic to lower himself to that level and would get himself a scholarship no matter who he had to bludgeon with his intelligence to do so. (Plus, I dunno, I can't help but think that even if he DID it wouldn't work too well because he'd be too busy telling the customers how incredibly stupid they are, TELL me you did not just say that because that is the worst line in history and no wonder you have to pay for it. XD)
Not that I object to the existence of these fics, mind you. You know me; I never object to a good prostitution fic. (Uh, that could have sounded better, but hey.) I'm simply objecting to the lack of corresponding John fics, srsly.
... Okay so I know I was going to talk about Things Wot Are Not Fandom (or really, things wot are not SGA) but it's half past and I have to get to the bus stop so I can catch the bus at 11.50. And I could just leave this entry until I go home and finish it then, but I'd probably never finish it, or would take another day at least, so I'll just hit post now and leave further non-fandom things until later.
