Nov. 14th, 2006 02:17 amOh my fucking GOD I'm tired. *yawns and rubs eyes*
So okay, today. It's been HUGE. I had an exam this morning, which feels like forever ago-- LAST EXAM WHOO! Free for 3 months! I don't think I completely failed it, so therefore better than I probably deserved. *cough*
Anyway, met up with Richard and Tristan for lunch, and then it was off to catch the coach to Sydney. I cut it quite fine. Anyway, I had two heavy bags with me (my backpack and a soft sports-type bag, you know, cylindrical with a shoulder strap) and it started bloody raining, didn't it, with high force winds.
Me: OH NOEZ I BETTER NOT GET RAINED ON AT U2! :O ... Also my laptop better still work. <<
But despite me getting wet and uncomfortable, by and large my stuff inside the (wet) bags remained dry and safe. Mysterious.
So, 3 hour coach trip to Sydney after almost 2 and a half hours sitting in an exam. Ow, ow, my back. Listened to my boyband!X cd, burned last night, for the first half of the trip until my discman batteries carked it (which is a worry; either I didn't charge it properly or the batteries are going, and I hope it's not the latter) and then pulled out my laptop and plugged my headphones into that. And, you know, since it was THERE, I also started writing. Which I stopped about an hour before we arrived to conserve power-- I KNOW I didn't charge the laptop properly (the plug knocked out) so it was only at 30%. Still, it managed to keep playing music until the last 10 minutes, which was about 30 minutes longer than it was estimating before I turned the power consumption down.
Thankfully it'd stopped raining by the time I got to Sydney, but further challenges awaited, especially for my poor back. I got to lug my two heavy bags up from the bus terminal to the train station, catch a train Central - Wynyard, walk for ages to get to my brother's office (compounded by a little bit of extra unnecessary walking towards the wrong NAB), get the keys, walk BACK to Wynyard, catch a train to Newtown, which was stupid (should've gone one stop further) and walk for eternity down Enmore rd, again a little bit further than necessary because I was lost and honestly? Didn't even remember the STREET NAME.
So I walked a long time to get to Rohan's place, ditched my stuff, and walked again (WITHOUT the heavy bags) to Stanmore station to catch a train to Lidcombe and then Homebush for the U2 concert.
By the way, I don't think this conveys the true pain of walking with those bags. My feet and back were KILLING me. If I hadn't found my brother's place when I did, I think I would have just sat down and cried. XD
I was immensely cheered by four facts, however.
1: I was no longer being rained upon.
2: I am FREE. FOR THREE MONTHS.
3: U2!!!!!
4: Got a call while on the train Wynyard - Newtown from Kinokuniya to tell me all my books are in. As I'm sure you've all heard me whinging endlessly about how I wanted them NOW, rah rah rah, but couldn't get them until Christmas because they weren't due in to Kinokuniya for another two weeks-ish, you'll understand that this is a small miracle. Hallelujah!
BUT BACK TO U2.
So my feet, and back, were already hurting. Now, we got to the stadium at about 7.30, when the support act (Kanya West?) was starting and... only went for 15 minutes. O-kay. We got quite a good location, not too far back from the restricted D area and in the centre, partially because Rohan is very large and good and shouldering through people and Tim and I, y'know. Followed in his wake. We ended up near some annoying people who smoked almost constantly, plus there was a tall guy (okay, fair enough, not his fault), a guy who kept moving his head so you'd try to change position to see around him and he'd just GET IN THE WAY AGAIN and a girl who kept getting up on her boyfriend's shoulders, which tied with the smoking for most annoying thing.
(but the extreme ow of my back and feet beats both of those things.)
However, it was worth it, because-- and I reiterate: U2!!!!!
My brother said, and I agree to a certain extent, that it could have been better in places (he said he'd seen the DVD of their Sydney tour in the 90s and it was much better). Some of the song choices were a little strange-- there were some really OBSCURE songs that no one really knew in there, and very little from the 1990-2000 era. Like, on the obscurity note-- Bono forgot the lyrics to one of the songs and The Edge had to sing the beginning to remind him, which was pretty funny. XD The choices were definitely going for the political angle rather than purely on the merits or popularity of the songs, which didn't always work out. There were two encores; the first was AWESOME, and the second one... just didn't have the same bang.
I mean, the main set finished with One, which was brilliant. The first encore finished with With Or Without You, which just kicked SO MUCH ARSE, especially since by that point I was afraid they wouldn't play it and was disappointed because it's one of my favourite U2 songs ever. But the second encore... there were three songs, and I don't think I knew any of them. Well, I vaguely knew the closer. But no one was really singing along, because... obscure. According to a guy on the train, one of them (that Bono forgot the lyrics to) was from an 80s B-side.
The songs that didn't get played that I was surprised not to hear were Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Sweetest Thing (but there was very little from that era, only about 3 songs in 2 hours) and All I Want Is You, which would have been great to finish the second encore. Maybe Desire. Out of the songs that they did play-- Vertigo rocked, Elevation was AWESOME, Sunday Bloody Sunday was really good live (aside from a random political interlude in the middle), Where The Streets Have No Name was probably the best song all night, Pride (In The Name Of Love) and Beautiful Day were both good, and With Or Without You = yay <3 Other good ones were New Year's Day and I Will Follow.
The lighting and the video screens were also really cool. Unfortunately I couldn't sing along as much as I'd like because my throat was strained due to a combination of cigarette smoke, dehydration and maybe a little sickness, but despite that and despite the things that could have been better it was still really excellent and worth the money and OMG. U2. LIVE.
Now if you'll excuse me, it's almost 3am, I am dying of exhaustion and I intend to pick up my books go watch The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D at the movies in the city tomorrow, so I am going to sleep nooooooow fwagh.
(ps: ow my feeeeeet, the pressure blisters... *wibble*)

Date: 2006-11-16 10:58 am (UTC)And yes, it is quite funny, especially when you look at the tracklist. XD I had my headphones around my neck, and my brother was just like, "... Is that a boyband?"
"*embarrassed* ... Yes."
"Which one."
"... Nsync."
"... Get out of my house."
