Today I got behind a wheel for the second time ever, and crashed my dad's car into a tree. No one was hurt-- well, I have thermal burns from the airbags on my right arm and a splinter of glass or plastic or something in one finger-- but it was horrible and traumatising and I cried for about an hour. Parents didn't get mad, but I still feel really guilty; the front of the car was crumpled and it had to get towed away. Ironically it happened when I was turning into my own street, my dad having picked me up from Mari's place and me driving all the way home and then I didn't turn sharply enough and panicked when I hit the curb and floored the accelerator instead of the brake. *misery* I have to file a police report tomorrow, apparently.
Also, airbags are kind of nasty. I'm sure they're a lesser evil but they're painful and they explode at you and smell of gunpower.
I don't want to drive a car again, but I kind of have to. And I have a lesson on Tuesday. D:

Date: 2007-02-04 10:29 am (UTC)*huggles* you'll get better. The only way to do that is get behind the wheel again. And then once you get the hang of it and are driving yourself everywhere independently and realise just how much more freedom being able to drive gives you, you'll wonder why you were so scared in the first place.
(One of these days I'll tell you about how many times I pranged parents' cars, or my brothers' accidents or that of friends ... in comparison you're doing pretty well!)

That must have been terrible.
Remember; if you get the right driving tutors, their cars are equipped with manual override in the passenger seat. They will break for you, if they need to. Just let them know first. I feel much safer when I know that if I panic, my instructor is there to stop me.
That said, you've crashed spectacularly; what do you have to fear now? next time, you'll be able to recognise the situation, and react better. Billy (My instructor) said that the scariest drivers to him were the ones who had never crashed on their Ls; they are statistically more likely to panic later on and have a bad one, rather than a series of small non-deadly bumps.

Date: 2007-02-04 05:25 pm (UTC)I had freakouts when I was learning to drive too. Eventually, you do mellow out, you just have to keep at it.
