Kattaiya: meanwhile, completely randomly, I adore Namco for making insane crossover games. Right now I'm playing a game which crosses over 5 Tales games and you can make 4 parties of 3 out of any of the main characters from the Tales games. And. They talk to each other. And if you put a couple of characters who are canonically in love or whatever on the same team there is a special tag saying "rabu-rabu?" (or you can have characters who are friends/like brothers/whatever with different party tags)
Becky: Awww, that sounds adorable.
Kattaiya: unfortunately, because you can have only 3 characters on a team
Kattaiya: I am left with the dilemma of what to do with long range fighters. BECAUSE THEY CAN'T BE THE LEADER. I'm sorry but nothing sucks like trying to fight a battle as an archer or a mage. But it's like suicide having a team without a healer. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH MY ARCHER/MAGE COUPLE, HUH?

*currently has them on a suicidal team with no healer, haha*
Becky: The things you do for cute couples, eh? XD
Kattaiya: pretty damn much. XD
Kattaiya: *now has amusing mental images of this game with Saiunkoku characters and trying to put Reishin, Shuuei and Kouyuu on the same team*

Because Shuuei would be your sword fighter, obviously. And Kouyuu would probably be a mage. And Reishin... uh... I'll get back to you on that, but he sure as hell wouldn't be a healer.
Kattaiya: Whereas Shuurei, Ryuuki and Seiran would make a great balanced team.
Becky: ......afsd;lkjafdslkjafdslkjfdslj, NO SHUT UP.
Becky: I don't want to contemplate that!
Becky: aa;lsalksjlak, HATE YOU.
Kattaiya: And in conclusion, OH MY FUCKING GOD I AM THE BIGGEST FUCKING GAME GEEK *EVER*
Becky: So, would Seiran be the tank, while Shuurei was the mage, and Ryuuki would be...?

(Not that I've played enough games for this, mind.)
Kattaiya: I reckon Seiran and Ryuuki would both be sword mages. But Shuuei and Ensei would both be like, non-magic swordsmen. Shuurei would be a healer. With maybe a feel spells like holy.
Kattaiya: Like, in Tales of Destiny, all the swordian masters had a sword and could use magic. Some of them were more inclined to one than the other, obviously, but Leon was pretty balanced. I'm thinking Ryuuki and Seiran along those lines, Seiran probably a little more weighted towards sword power and Ryuuki towards magic.

Whereas in like, Tales of Phantasia, each of your characters had a distinct role: healer, black mage, summoner, swordsman, archer, ninja. Shuuei, Kouyuu and Reishin would be like that.

DUDE, REISHIN COULD BE A SUMMONER. :DDD

And Shouka? SO a ninja. I mean. That's canon.
Kattaiya: Kourin would also be a healer.
Becky: Reishin as a Summoner! Perfect. And you make me wish I were more familiar with the proper classes of gaming so that I could help with this.
Kattaiya: hur hur hur. Tales of Phantasia is pretty traditional. So are the earlier final fantasies. I mean, a lot of more recent RPGs have started to bleed these things together so the lines aren't as clear-- like, Roni in Destiny II is your tank, he has a whopping great axe and fighting techs, but he also knows Heal and a few black magic spells.
Becky: I've pretty much stuck to the KH games and FFXII and only just started in on FFVIII. I know nothing. XDKattaiya: Your basic final fantasy classes were like, Knight, Thief, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Summoner. Monk = martial artist. If you're getting fancy, I mean... there were 14 characters in FFVI, each with a distinct role. That role wasn't always terribly CLEAR in battle, but... *tries to remember*

Kattaiya: And, uh, wassname, the old guy... Shou-Taishi? totally a shape-shifter.
