Checks and balances.
Jul. 18th, 2007 01:11 pmMy life is all about the ups and downs at the moment; I'm not quite sure what to make of it, so a list.
UP: I've pre-ordered the Harry Potter book and it's coming out on Saturday, glee!
DOWN: I've finished book 7 of Mirage of Blaze, as anticipated right on a cliffhanger, and book 8 is still nowhere to be seen.
UP: I might've topped Administrative Law last semester, and if I did, there's a $500 prize!
DOWN: I know there's an official letter coming my way but I don't know what's in it. It could just be "congratulations, you got an HD!" rather than a letter saying I topped the course. And this letter, like my book, is nowhere in sight.
UP: I have all the stray beads in Okami except the one you get for beating the game!
Er... Further UP: I have discovered that there is a choice of voice-acting in KHII final mix and that it's cutscene by cutscene, so I can listen to scenes with lots of Disney in English and scenes with Square characters in Japanese! I almost cried of happy.
VERY CONSIDERABLE DOWN: The Japanese government has stopped giving undergraduate scholarships to study in Japan, which means I have gone from virtual certainty of getting a scholarship to high improbability. There's still a private foundation scholarship which I was hoping for anyway, since it was the best one, but the chances of getting it are considerably lower than the chances of getting one of the other scholarships and this is stressing me out. I'm ignoring all the noises my parents are making about me not going-- I'm an adult, it's part of my degree, it's not their choice-- and I'll probably be able to get by between what I've saved, tutoring jobs and my credit card, but I imagine I'll be living not terribly far above the poverty line for the year, which is depressing given I thought I would get some kind of scholarship for sure. *sigh* Oh well, such is life. It's a pity they couldn't do this halfway through NEXT year, though.
Right now the combination of the mail hating me and the problems with the scholarship having me leaning more on the down scale and I'm feeling a little depressed, but it'll pass soon enough. Probably when I turn on Okami again.
ETA--
DOWN: I have to do an oral presentation, a written submission, a research essay AND a final exam for IP law, none of which are optional nor redeemable.
UP: I can potentially do the oral presentation/written submission on modchips! :D
DOWN: My legs are TOTALLY BUGGERED from the Japanese tour guide thing I did on Monday. Which I missed classes for, also.
UP: Nevertheless, it was fun and I will get paid for it.
UP: I could potentially have my license as early as next Wednesday-- I only have one review and one competency left on my logbook.
DOWN: ... no one will let me drive their car once I have it. <<

Date: 2007-07-18 07:47 am (UTC)You and me both, sister. Is that what happened with all the MEXT scholarships or just the undergraduate ones? I was told by my teacher that they put all the applications on a table and picked at random, which seemed a bit strange to me. Hmmm... Let's hope we both get some kind of financial support while we're over there. Which part are you going to, anyway?
And if worst comes to worst, there's always the English conversation tutoring jobs that's apparently quite good money. That is an option...

Date: 2007-07-18 08:34 am (UTC)I'm going to talk to one of my sensei about other options for financial support, yeah. There's one scholarship that I want to know if I have a shot at, through a private foundation. Otherwise the ANU gives a one-off finanical support payment that would cover plane ticket and a little more...
I don't know yet, uni list is being released this friday, but I'm hoping for Tokyo U of Foreign Studies. You?
(YES. BRING ON EIGO KAIWA.)

Date: 2007-07-18 11:26 am (UTC)I think the UC pays for the plane ticket but they don't give any other money besides that. Ugh, UC, such cheapskates
I'm applying for Tokyo Gakugei Daigaku, which unfortunately is a public university but apparently has a really high rep for education. Oh man, leave it to me to apply for the hard uni X___X
(HELL YES. IF THERE'S ONE THING WE CAN DO, IT'S TALK IN ENGLISH XD)

Date: 2007-07-18 11:45 am (UTC)Aaaaaaaah, I still don't know if I got it for sure, but I'm hopeful. Thank you, though!
Really? I guess maybe... I don't know, I'm certainly motivated when it comes to certain things, like video games. XD I do tend to set high standards for myself, but they often war with my own laziness, sadly. *g*
