I keep meaning to update and then running out of motivation. I am blaming this at least partially on a sudden spike in fic-reading, because that often renders me useless for anything else. It's kind of like alcoholism, actually. You think you've kicked the habit, just a little bit is okay, and then you end up on a binge incapable of doing anything useful. XD

Even before that I've been having trouble with motivation and concentration for uni, though, so I can't blame it for having not done my reading. The start of term caught me on a bad point in my mental sine curve. <<

Anyway, things to say. Hm. I'm very tired, because (again thanks to the state of mind I'm in at the moment) I have no willpower to make myself go to bed at a reasonable hour. I'm cold, because Canberra is freaking crazy and is also the foggiest capital city in Australia. On the weekend I got signed off for my last logbook competency and have a slip of paper saying I can get my Ps anytime within 90 days; we're not rushing out to get it just yet because being a licensed driver under 25 means extra insurance and I think they want to actually SEE me drive.

What else? Oh, right. I'm on book 9 of Mirage now, will at some point go back and give summary/opinions of books 7 and 8. Have begun to procure Torchwood and Doctor Who, finally caving to everyone else in the universe. Going to see Tales of Earthsea at the movies tomorrow with my aunt. Also, while I have a billion other things I SHOULD be writing, a bunny savaged me and I'm writing a fic for [livejournal.com profile] fahye's [livejournal.com profile] hpmugglestudies challenge.

O god I'm going to fall asleep in my ComCon lecture. *yawn*

Anyway, on a final note, I keep forgetting to say anything because I haven't exactly been updating much, but, on the Haneef thing:

Having been held for 3 weeks, first by the police without charge and then by a detention centre after the Court granted him bail and the Immigration Minister responded by revoking his visa, Dr Haneef has finally been released and has gone home to his family in India. After buggering up pretty much everything, including the DPP giving a false statement of facts to the Magistrate about the location of the sim card that was found in the UK, they eventually had to admit that they didn't have enough evidence to charge him.

That apparently isn't good enough for the Immigration Minister, however, who, having revoked Haneef's visa for "failing the bad character test", has refused to return it. In the first place, revoking the visa in that way was clearly an abuse of power; it was used as a way to undermine the Court's decision to grant bail, to detain rather than the intended purpose to deport, and it judged Haneef guilty before he'd been tried. Despite him now having been released without charge, the Minister, Kevin Andrews, will still not return the visa. He has the nerve to go so far as to say Haneef's "rapid departure" from Australia is a sign of his guilt.

Gee, I wonder why after 3 weeks of that kind of treatment, the revoking of his working visa and the recent birth of his daughter in India he would be in any kind of hurry at ALL to leave? /sarcasm

Anyway, it seems Haneef is going to challenge the decision to revoke his visa in Court. There are definitely grounds there, but it's very hard to challenge that kind of immigration decision. Oh well, we shall see, I suppose.

And now I will get off my soapbox and pay more attention to the Tasmanian Dam Case once more. COUGH.
