Basically, Ji told me to, and I was bored in a lecture. So I did. Hidden Common Knowledge about Australia quiz.

1. How many states does Australia have?
Bonus 1: Name the states.
Bonus 2: How many (mainland) territories are there, and what are their names?

2. Name 5 uniquely Australian mammals.
Bonus: Name the sub-group of mammal found only in Australia and the species that belong to it.

3. What needs to happen for Australia to become a Republic?
Bonus: Has this ever happened? If so, when?

4. Which of these is the Australian flag?

Bonus 1: What does the Australian flag symbolise?
Bonus 2: What are the other flags?

5. What is the capital of Australia?
Bonus: What are the capitals of the states and territories?

6. What is the "stolen generation"?

7. In which area of Australia was genocide committed on the indigenous population?

8. What are the names of the two major political parties in Australia?

9. When was Australia settled by Europeans?
Bonus 1: What kind of settlement was it?
Bonus 2: What areas were settled?
Bonus 3: What was the name of the man who "discovered" Australia?

10. When was Federation?

(Don't feel bad if you can't answer all of these. The Chaser proved that neither can a lot of Australians.)

Also, two things; silly Heroes fic, Matt, Mohinder and Molly-centric, on [livejournal.com profile] insaneidiot, and short reports on the beginning of Persona 3 and Heroes of Mana on [livejournal.com profile] masterofpixels.

PS, on my last entry bitching about everything I forgot something which really, really pissed me off: John Howard called the GOD damn election for the same date as my 21st party. This is the very big party where a lot of time and effort and expense and planning involved. Where we booked the venue like 2 months ago so the date can't be changed. And now everyone (myself included) is going to be too busy fixating over the electoral count and watching the TV in the main bar to party. >( Which is just proof that John Howard ruins EVERYTHING. I hope it's a landslide against him and the result is obvious really early. Not that I don't hope that anyway, but now I have extra reason!

Heeeey, cool, now I can chop half the questions off the one that *I* was writing. And replace them with more exciting ones :D

That's why you can't have called elections! The system is bad!

1. ... 5? I can put them in the right places in Seterra, but not name them. New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory ... Queensland?

2. Koalas, kangaroo, duck-billed platypi, WOMBATS MAYBE?, and... more... marsupials.

3. Australia needs to reform its electoral system and NOT HAVE THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE.

4. Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand ... Tasmania?

5. Canberra!

6. I don't know.

7. Areas were no one lived?

8. Liberal (a lie!!!) and... the other one.

9. In the... 19th century? As a penal colony. By... a poseur.

10. Late 1960s?

omg I need the teachings. But I do understand single transferable vote!!

Calling elections is totally lame. It's inconvenient for the Australian people because there is a period of months over which there could be an election and you can't plan around it-- MY PARTY, CASE IN POINT. also, it puts too much power in the hands of the incumbent party. Filled with suck.

I can screen it if you like. That way other people won't be able to see your answers. *g*

How's life in Tokyo? And omg, do you know where you are in relation to Tokyo Gai-Dai? because that is where *I* will be in 5 months time!

Yes please XD

It`s good! Today was the first day of classes and it was so fun! We learned about intonation and everyone had to read out some words in their native language to learn about tones and accents. So much fun XD And one of my friends joined the archery club so we saw a demonstration and it was really cool :DDDDD

Where`s Tokyo Gai-Dai? `Cause I`m in the western part of Tokyo but I know how to get to like Shinjuku and some other parts of Tokyo. When you buy your phone, get AU so you can email me for free!

Awesome, feel free and I'll screen it once you've done it. :D

Oh, that sounds so cool, I can't wait! Tokyo Gai-dai is... it's a little out of Tokyo, I think. I've been told it's nice 'cause it's kind of like a small town-ish atmosphere but it's only 30m by shinkansen to the CBD.

Um. Um.

1)...I have a feeling that there are at least five. I may be wrong.
But!
Bonus #1: South Australia. New South Wales. ACT. Victoria. I'm forgetting something, aren't I? Aaaaaaaaargh. (*looks it up on google after a moment*) Ah, I knew it.

2) Kangaroo. Platypus. Wallabies. Koala. Bilbies? Tasmanian Devils.

5) Canberra, perhaps? :p

6) The aboriginal children stolen from their parents actually not so long ago (50 or so years, was it?). But really, who hasn't watched Rabbit Proof Fence by now?

8) The Liberal party and (hah) 'Labor'.

9) Bonus #3: I'll take a stab in the dark and guess it's someone called Macquarie. Heaven knows that enough places are named after him.

*wavewave* Will there be answers at some point later? Although I've already remembered that I'm wrong about #9. ^^;

I hope it's a landslide against him and the result is obvious really early. Not that I don't hope that anyway, but now I have extra reason!

Surely there's no possibility that it isn't going to be a landslide? It'd be terribly disappointing if it wasn't. I know I'll be sitting with chocolates and fizzy grape juice to celebrate the crushing defeat.

Omg, I totally forgot to respond to these! *facepalm* I was leaving it so as not to give it away too early and then forgot. Hahaha a winnar iz I.

1) There are six states and two territories-- ACT (Australian Capital Territory) is one of the territories. The other is the Northern Territory. WE ARE SO CREATIVE AT NAMES, YO. The states are Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and New Zealand Western Australia. (at one stage it looked more likely that NZ was going to be a state than WA. XD)

2) All possible answers. :D There are also, hm, dingoes, echidnas... and a bunch of assorted marsupials. The sub-group is monotremes, mammals that lay eggs, and the monotremes are the platypus and the echidna.

3) There has to be a referendum to amend the Constitution. There WAS a referendum in 1999, but it failed.

4) Did you miss this one? Second one is Australian. Top is British, third is NZ, fourth is the Eureka Stockade flag. Australian flag consists of the Union Jack (because it's a Commonwealth country), the Southern Cross, and a 7-point star for the States and... er, I don't know if the seventh point is supposed to be NT or ACT. Or Australia as a whole. Probably NT though.

5) Well done. XD (Bonuses-- Darwin, NT; Sydney, NSW; Brisbane, Qld; Melbourne, Vic; Hobart, Tas; Adelaide, SA; Perth, WA)

6) Ah, it's been a while since I've seen that movie. Anyway, yes.

7) Tasmania

8) Indeed! I always fucking typo Labor unless I think about it. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to take a word from the vernacular and then spell it differently?! THIS IS NOT AMERICA, 1930S LABOR PARTY.

9) Hee! There was a guy called Macquarie in colonial history, but the man who discovered Australia in the name of England was Captain James Cook. Who was later and probably deservedly killed by the natives of Hawaii. Anyway, we were settled in 1788 as a penal colony, with the initial landing in Botany Bay (NSW). There was also an early colony on what was then called Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania).

10) January 1 1901.

This is true. I'd prefer it to be obvious early on, though, because that way we can all be happy about this and go back to the party instead of hanging out in the bar watching the electoral count and biting our nails.

I am here because Fahye mentioned you.

I am pissed off about the date of the election because it is the ONE saturday in the second half of this year when I'm NOT in my home state. So I'm missing out on going to the local primary school with all my friends (who all live in the same electorate, all within a ten minute walk of my house), then missing out on several awesome Election Day parties. >o(

Yeah, my party being on election day means all my interstate relos have to postal vote and my sister can't hold the election party she's been planning. It is a pain, but really, I should have expected that, because that is what John Howard does. HE CAUSES PAIN.

Anyway, hi! Nice to meet you, fellow Australian!
