Oct. 30th, 2007 03:53 amI am halfway through book 11 of Mirage of Blaze. Which means that today I read around 170 pages, because I was about 50 from the end of book 10 when I started. Mochiron, I did other stuff as well; I even worked on my com con summaries.
... I. I'm leaving the above sentence as testament to how fucked up my mind is getting. I almost described the scent of Kotori's hair as "nostalgic" the other day, and it took me a while to find a non-clunky English synonym for "hisashiburi". Oh, man, I fail.
But this is not the point of this entry. The point of this entry is a burning urge to SHARE. Specifically, to share why Takaya is now my favourite again and why, for once, I want to give BOTH Naoe and Takaya hugs right now.
This is not a whole report on the plotline I'm currently on, because... well, it's nearly 4 in the morning, I'm 4 and a half books ahead of where my summaries left off and I'm going to need to go back because there are things from the last two plotlines that are important to THIS plotline, and also, I am in the middle of the 2nd book in a 3 book arc, so, you know. There is a lot of "blah blah, this guy is from book 5.5, long story, never mind" because this is more about the soap opera of Naoe and Kagetora than it is about, you know, the plot. (I swear the plot will come later, though. Really.)
So okay, blah blah, stuff happens, Takaya's POV somewhere near the end of book 10 gives some actual insight into wtf he is thinking and also, wtf KAGETORA has been thinking for the past 400 years-- because Takaya subconsciously slips into Kagetora's thought processes and when he snaps out of it he is like, oh my god, what are you THINKING, self!-- which is, if he gives in to Naoe, Naoe will no longer have a reason to fight against him and thus will lose interest and no longer have any reason to fixate on him and Kagetora will lose him. Even if Naoe's screwed up, at least he's still tied to Kagetora.
Also, Saburou was scarred for (very long) life by being raped when he was 15.
Me: AW, BABY, YOU NEED A HUG. ;___; ... also, wow, you really ARE just as fucked up in the head as Naoe. Congratulations?
Anyway, whatever, moving on from that, they are both bitches to each other when Takaya finds out Naoe's lost his powers, but mostly (from Takaya's side) because he's freaked out that everything everyone was saying about him losing Naoe and Naoe being pretty much done for and slipping away was in fact true and he is like, O NOEZ, I WILL LOSE HIM FOREVER AND EVER. *freaks out*
Blah blah, plot, blah blah blah. Okay. Now we are into book 11, wherein everything sucks that much more, because at the end of book 10 Oda reawakened-- using Yuzuru as a host-- and blew up the ship they were on and they're on a tiny random island at the mercy of Kotarou, the Fuuma ninja from back in books 6 to 8.
Yeah, it's a long story, you'll hear all about it later.
But more to the point, Naoe is now blind as well as powerless. Meaning he is COMPLETELY DEFENCELESS ahahaha. Cue a whole new level of Takaya freaking out. Naoe is kind of a douche at this point and tries to molest him, which is pretty special when theoretically Takaya has all the power (what with, you know, being able to see and shoot energy with his mind and stuff), but. This isn't the point either.
The point is that Kotarou is all, you know what, Kenshin is using you! "Narita Yuzuru" must be destroyed! Obey your father Ujiyasu!
Takaya: What? Fucking NO!
At which point the cult crazies from books 5.5 and 9 that Kotarou made an alliance with at the end of 9 (again with the long story) show up with Naoe, and Fuuma ninja is like, I know that sounded like a request, but actually it's the kind of request that is NOT OPTIONAL.
Cult nutter: Also, we have a hostage! Hur.
Naoe: *is such a liability*
Blah blah, they get taken hostage, blah blah, and taken to the Mouri clan's base-- because the Ikkou cult and the Fuuma (on Houjyou's behalf-- being Takaya, since he destroyed the rest of his clan in book 8 SORRY LONG STORY AGAIN) have allied with them against Oda, and, uh, so have the Takeda and these pirates called the Morikami (look, uh, never mind)-- where they're all like, soooo, Houjyou-dono, we think you should help us. Reiteration of all that stuff Kotarou said about Kenshin using you, destroying Yuzuru, etc!
Takaya: Fuck you all so much. I said no, I mean NO.
Them: If you don't cooperate we'll kill Naoe.
Takaya: ......................................
Also, Takaya's memory is triggered that Yuzuru is Kagekatsu. SUCKS TO BE TAKAYA.
Adding to the stress, in the brief moment he sees Naoe, Naoe is like, don't do what they say! Don't worry about me! In fact, if necessary I want you to kill me yourself!
Takaya: ...........................
Takaya: *PUNCHES KOTAROU* I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!
You go, Takaya!
In conclusion, Takaya needs SO MANY HUGS, and Naoe kind of does too, and isn't it kind of ironic that the two people who mean the most to Takaya are also the two people who have driven Kagetora to suicide in previous lives?
Er, yeah, anyway.

Date: 2007-10-30 03:26 am (UTC)I found this arc rather boring in the beginning, but I gradually loved it when it progressed to the middle - esp when Kotarou keeps pestering Takaya, and the interactions between Takaya and Naoe. XD
(Sorry for jumping in to comment so suddenly)

Date: 2007-10-30 04:07 am (UTC)I think I must be a masochist or a sadist or both, probably both. I'm a sucker for them both being fucked up in the head when it comes to each other and crazy and possessive. But then again, this should come as news to absolutely NO ONE, considering how much Seishirou/Subaru fic I've written. XD
Agreed that the arc started off slowly; there was not enough of the Takaya-and-Naoe show in the first half of book 10, for a start. Both the Naoe/Takaya interaction and the plot itself have sped up, though, so it's all much more exciting!

Date: 2007-10-30 03:48 pm (UTC)I feel like a bad person for wanting to write one of those 'Five Times/Things/Places/etc.' fics for them, i.e. 'Five Times Naoe Drove Kagetora to Suicide (and the One Time He Didn't).' XD
Although, with them, the 'One Time He Didn't' becomes somewhat optional. Oh well, if they weren't so desperately twisted and fucked up, I wouldn't love them so!

Date: 2007-10-30 11:48 pm (UTC)That would be kind of awesome, actually. *is a bad person also* The "One Time He Didn't" would have to be Takaya's lifetime, obviously.
(Meanwhile I have finished book 11 and Takaya has FINALLY gotten his hug from Naoe. This was somewhat marred by Naoe subsequently getting himself killed protecting Takaya right after Takaya made him promise not to commit suicide. I... assume this has to correct itself. Somehow. But I have no idea how. I foresee a very miserable Takaya for at least one book, but I have the horrible suspicion it may be more.)
