Nov. 25th, 2007 02:43 amToday was just... it was a really wonderful day. I couldn't have wished for much better. (Okay, I could've wished for one more mark in IP and for people not to have spent more time watching the election tally than in the party room, but these are minor in the grand scheme of things.)
Today was the day of my 21st birthday party. It's not actually my birthday until December 13 (teh pronz is always appreciated! HINT HINT. no, just kidding, I'm not that mean when everyone is flat out with yuletide and so forth XD), but because of the Christmas/formals/people going overseas season, I decided many months ago that it would be wiser to have my party just after the end of exams, but before December.
And then about a month or so after I decided the date and booked the venue and everything, John Howard called his election for the same night. There were tears; there was frustration; there were, I will admit, sulking and melodramatics about my party being ruined, RUINED! Because the majority of people there were intensely political and would be more interested in the election than me, and, I worried, if John Howard won (AGAIN) it would totally ruin it for me for all time and become a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MEMORY.
The first fear was somewhat founded; there was a tv set up in the gym room next to the function room my party was in, and the Greens (a very left-wing political party) were having their election party downstairs. There was an awful lot of defection. At one point, I think 70% of my party was actually in the room with the tv. I barely saw
_leareth or my brother or my father at all. :P
But it wasn't as bad as it could have been. After all, I'm intensely political too-- on multiple occasions, I defected from my OWN party to watch the election count. XD Also, the results throughout the night were fairly positive towards Labor, so there was a constant feeling of excitement and hopeful anticipation rather than despair.
And when Howard gave his concession speech, pretty much 100% of my party crashed the Greens' function.
Yes, that's right:
And what makes things EVEN FUCKING BETTER is that he lost his own seat. He is only the second prime minister in Australian history to do so. HAH. HAH. HAH.
Seriously: sweet, sweet victory. After 11 and a half years, you have no idea how good this feels. It's like the universe decided to give me the best birthday present ever, and the mood at my party after the Labor victory... oh, it was just wonderful. Plus I got most of my party back then. XD And it was fun watching the concession speech at the Greens' function. The woman I voted 1 in the Senate for gave a speech, which was good, and oh, how satisfying it was to yell out heckling insults at Howard during his concession speech. It was a beautiful, beautiful moment. It was a beautiful, beautiful landslide victory. I was so afraid it would turn out like 1998 where the majority of voters voted for Labor but not in the right places, so Liberal still got more seats and scraped back into government, but it was an incredibly decisive Liberal defeat and I. I just. NO WORDS, SEE. ♥
I'm just so happy that even though I have a headache and a stomachache I don't even care. It was a wonderful party; so many people came, relatives and friends who travelled all the way interstate to be there, and almost everyone I invited made it. And they all said lovely things, and gave me the most beautiful, thoughtful presents ever. I opened them after I came home, with my parents and siblings, and Victoria, and Scott (sister's boyfriend of 8 or 9 years) and Graham (Scott's younger brother). I just have no words. Three of my cousins plus my cousin William's new wife BiYi gave me the most beautiful present imaginable: a gorgeous sake set and a yukata. The wrapping was beautiful too, black with a band and a cord around it like an obi. Claire gave me a gorgeous Chinese calligraphy set, and there was lots of beautiful jewellery and books related to Japan and Japanese tea cups and champagne glasses and all sorts of wonderful things. Mari, Jen, Ros and Victoria's present was still in the mail, so they gave me a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, and... guys, you didn't have to do that, and it was just so sweet of you. They're so lovely.
Unfortunately some of the cards got separated from the presents; mostly I'm fairly certain about what was from whom, but some of them I'm going to have to deductively reason my way through.
On a connected note, I was really happy with how I looked tonight; I spent 3 hours (and three hundred dollars, but my mum's covering half) at the hairdresser in the morning, before I drove to Fyshwick to collect the balloons for the table. By the time I'd then walked down the road to vote, I really only had time left to get ready for the party. There'll be photos eventually; there were a lot of digital cameras there, including our own, but none were taken with ours so I'll be relying on friends and family. They should send them to me eventually, though, and I'll upload when I've got them.
I know I'm just babbling and not making any sense at all, but I'm just so happy that it's hard to be intelligible. I just want everyone to know how I'm overflowing with it... it was one of the best parties I could have had, even with people distracted by the election (including, I must re-emphasise, myself).
Oh, also-- quick mention, I got my uni marks for the semester back. I'm pretty happy with them. I'm kind of-- um, frustrated (*was about to type 悔しい and caught herself*) about getting 69 for Intellectual Property, because that's one mark off a Distinction, but... it was a really crappy course, and it's over, and I don't have to ever do it again. I don't feel like it was truly a measure of my abilities. And I got 77 for Constitutional Law, which is a good D and a good mark for law, and 93 for Japanese, so I'm reasonably happy with those marks too. It wasn't semester 1, but it was still a good result, so much better than second year which was just blah. (Straight credits in law. didn't help that I kept getting depressed around assessment periods, I must say, but it's done now; it doesn't matter.)
There may be a return to your regular scheduled fandom activities tomorrow, but for now I just need to bask in the glow of the happiness of finally, finally winning the election (fourth time lucky, not counting the 1996 election where Howard first got into power: 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007) and my wonderful party and the wonderful people who are my friends and family.

Date: 2007-11-25 12:28 am (UTC)But I have all the cards-- just not always with the present they came with. Yours is one of the ones I could easily tell who it was from, and seriously, how much work did you put INTO that? There are so many little pockets and zips and things, I was amazed. Thank you. ♥
