Jan. 24th, 2008 09:58 pmOne day I may bitch about how hard it was to get my passport application submitted (FINALLY DONE), but right now I just want to talk about Torchwood 2x02.
By which I mean, FJKLFJDSKLFJDSKLFJKLSD TORCHWOOD. If you are like this all season you will KILL ME WITH YOUR AWESOME, and I won't object at all.
Non-spoiler reaction: ILU, Ianto, you have all the best lines. <3
Okay, first off, I have to say-- this was genuinely horrifying in the way that previously, Doctor Who has been, but Torchwood has never quite managed before. It was BRUTAL, I was flinching whenever someone got stabbed. It really didn't pull its punches, with the mother letting her baby's pram roll into incoming traffic and the man killing his wife, killing the father in front of his own wife and children.
It was really actually very frightening, too, which is again something Doctor Who has always had better luck with than Torchwood before. The idea of an alien invasion from the inside out-- taking out the command structure and essentially rendering the emergency protocols inoperative, using our own weapons against us so that they can destroy the world even though there's only four of them-- that's kind of terrifying.
Consequently, it wasn't as funny as last week's episode, but I think that worked, because it still had occasional funny comments (mostly care of Ianto, who isn't taking Jack too seriously even if Jack is), and it pulled off the mood it was carrying instead. It's nice to have a mix of funny/shippy episodes with dramatic episodes, so long as they're both done RIGHT.
Now. Here are some of the many reasons Ianto is my new favourite:
Jack: *comes up from the interrogation room* (haha, he postures like a highschool boy lounging against the lockers "casually" while chatting up the girl he likes)
Ianto: "Just us. This room. As long as it takes." Terrifying.
Jack: *hopefully* Really?
Ianto: Absolutely. Shivers down my spine.
Jack: You don't LOOK scared.
Ianto: It... passed.
Jack: GRR.
Jack: It was just that one race, they have particularly high blood pressure.
Ianto: Oh, right, their heads must explode all the time.
(...)
Tosh: Take it easy, Jack. Stop at the first sign of trouble.
Ianto: Or the first sign of EXPLODING.
Jack: *ignoring him* Gwen. Bring her up.
Ianto: *mimes being electrocuted*
Jack: HEY.
Beth: Will it hurt?
Jack: ... Yeah.
Beth: Your bedside manner's rubbish.
Gwen: You should see his manners in bed, they're atrocious. Apparently, so I've heard.
Ianto: Oh, they are. I remember this one--
Jack: AHEM.
Ianto: *sounding genuinely peeved* They know more about this place than I do. NOBODY knows more than I do! (hee, he is proud of his tourist information status, who knew?)
Gwen: Why would anyone want to kill him?
Ianto: He's also the city co-ordinator, takes charge of the city in major emergencies, has all the emergency protocols.
Owen: Well how do you know all that?
Ianto: *DUH voice* I know everything. And it says so on the bottom of the screen.
Tosh: No, I CAN'T just hook something up, the entire telephone network is down!
Owen: Alright, what about mobiles?
Tosh: The ENTIRE. TELEPHONE NETWORK. IS DOWN.
Ianto: Mobiles, landlines, tin cans with bits of string, everything, absolutely everything. No phones, phones all broken. *mimes holding a phone to his head* Hello? Anyone there? NO, because the phones AREN'T WORKING.
Jack: With a dashing hero like me on the case, how can we fail? *hangs up*
Ianto: *thoughtfully* He is dashing, you have to give him that. (*DIES*)
Owen: ..............
Owen: And what if they can't stop it?
Tosh: They'll stop it.
Owen: Yeah, but if they CAN'T?
Ianto: Then it's... all over.
Owen: *sighs and nods slowly* Let's all have sex.
Ianto: ... And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse.
In conclusion, Ianto knows everything, and clearly they need him around to keep Jack's ego in check and lay the put down on Owen when he's being obnoxious. XD
Seriously, I think that encompasses all my favourite lines. *g* But back to the point-- I felt really sorry for Beth. I liked how we actually SAW how Gwen was the really human one in this ep, although I got a bit annoyed at her at the end when Beth just wanted to die and Gwen was trying to push her into doing the cryogenic freezing-- Beth was making it easy for them to shoot her (and Ianto had a gun and shot it too! he's part of the team, aaaaaw), but Gwen was making it harder for Beth to go. Even after Beth was dead, she was like "SHE WANTED YOU TO SHOOT HER. SO YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE." I'm sorry, WHAT? It's what she wanted, so shouldn't you respect her wishes? She killed her husband, she knows she's dangerous and might bring about the end of the world, she's part of an alien invasion and doesn't think she can win against her sleeper self, so she wants to go while she's still herself-- how can you blame her for that? How can you take that away from her? That's the point where it becomes selfish, not wanting her to die for so you don't feel guilty rather than for her own sake.
Right before that scene, just quickly-- what was that thing with Jack and Ianto? Ianto was coming up, caught sight of Jack, started towards him, and then Jack got this kind of "oh shit" expression and turns around and walks out with Ianto following. What was that about? Is Ianto going to yell at him for ruining more clothes by getting stabbed? O.o;
Um, other comments... oh! That bit with Jack's manners in bed, followed by Ianto and Gwen walking out of the vaults arm in arm. Have they become best girlfriends or something? XD Like, there's this email on the official website of Ianto apologising to Gwen and saying that Jack's gone, she's in charge, he shouldn't expect her to do everything Jack's way-- did they bond after that? Is that how Gwen knows about Jack's manners in bed? *intrigued and amused* Speaking of Jack and Ianto and bed, I wonder what happened with the date. Has it already happened between episodes and won't be referred to again? Has it not happened yet and they're just being awkward and not talking about it? I guess we'll have to wait and see. If it doesn't come up again this season, we'll have to assume the former.
On a random side note, I'm curious what was up with that Weevil, too. Maybe we'll find out more about them this season.
As for the next episode preview... not much to say. Tosh and the guy from the past are cute together. Stuff from the past is always fun. Can't tell much more from it, will just have to wait until next week.
My final word on this is that I'm interested that they seem to have introduced a plot arc for the season-- "When are the others coming?" "They're already here"-- two, if you count the Time Agents, which makes a big difference from S1 and again, brings it closer to Doctor Who. (S1, daleks and bad wolf; s2, cybermen, parallel universe; s3, Saxon, Time Lords becoming human, "you are not alone".)
By which I mean, FJKLFJDSKLFJDSKLFJKLSD TORCHWOOD. If you are like this all season you will KILL ME WITH YOUR AWESOME, and I won't object at all.

Date: 2008-01-24 12:45 pm (UTC)THIS season is so far two episodes in and has been filled with win and awesomeness. And it's going to have Martha in it at some point. So-- don't give up on it on the basis of S1. Which I think has parts that make it worth it, and is necessary explation for S2, but is kind of like a prelude to the real awesomeness.
