ILU, CHIAKI, NEVER CHANGE.
Except for that thing with Oda, but anyway. To give some background: Naoe was made commander of the New Uesugi behind Takaya's back. A lot of stuff involving Oda and the New Uesugi and the Old Uesugi happened, Chiaki supposedly got obliterated fighting Oda sort of on Takaya's behalf. Meanwhile Takaya gets afflicted with evil eye. He and Naoe shack up in a remote mountain cottage-- with actual shacking up involved, this being book 20-- until Takaya decides to drug Naoe and run off into the wilderness. For Naoe's own good. Because sleeping with Takaya is slowly killing him.
ANYWAY, flash forward, Takaya is hanging out in the wilds of Shikoku when he gets co-opted into this band of guerillas called the Red Whales. He eventually becomes one of their officers. Shit happens, but is not important to my point here. What IS important is that: a, Naoe has been chasing after Takaya ever since and ended up being the "Kebesu" (cross between a fiance and spirit guide thing) to this girl calling herself the mountain god before he ditched her and ran off to infiltrate the Red Whales, and b, Nagahide survived (but not as Chiaki) and inexplicably joined up with Oda.
Then more stuff happened, Miho (mountain god) got hurt and could only be healed by a Kebesu, Nagahide heard her psychic calls for help, it turns out a Kebesu is really just a Kanshousha. Ichizou, originally a member of the Red Whales turned thief who'd been helping Naoe find Takaya, is trying to persuade Miho to give up on Naoe because it ain't gonna happen, baby, and take Nagahide as her Kebesu instead.
PS, Danna is like master of the house and is what Ichizou calls Naoe.

"Hey, Miho, isn't that great? You've found a new Kebesu now, so that means you can defeat the beast, doesn't it?"
"Oi, don't go deciding that on your own."
"It's okay now, right? You don't have to have any more to do with the Red Whales, right?"
Miho is reluctant. She's still heartbroken over Naoe.
"I'm telling you, it won't work out with Danna. You have to give up and just bear with this person."
"Nobody's even asked me. And BEAR with? What the hell do you mean, bear with?"
Pulling himself together, Nagahide peered at Miho's face.
"By the way, miss, that's an interesting sword you've got there."
Miho startled, concealing Amahome. To be honest it wasn't as though Nagahide was being forced to hang around. He'd noticed the odd aura of the short sword at Miho's hip and stayed by himself.
"N... no! This is the royal birthright! I can only show it to the Kebesu!"
"Miho, he's a Kebesu too, isn't he?"
"No, no! A mountain god only has ONE Kebesu! Only one!" Miho yelled, starting to cry. It seems that in finding herself a new Kebesu, she'd become overly enamoured with Naoe. Even Ichizou couldn't counter that, and with a pose of despair he said,
" A woman's heart is a difficult thing. And it had to be Naoe no Danna, didn't it."
Nagahide's eyes jerked toward him.
"What did you just say?"
"Eh? Well, you know, a woman's heart."
"After that."
"It had to be Naoe no Danna...?"
For a moment, Nagahide stopped moving, but then he pressed his hand to his forehead with deep weariness and groaned.
"Are you okay?"
"... Never mind. I think I just suffered a serious blow to my pride."

The scene does go on, but that is the part that made me roll around LOLing. Also, later--
Me: *for the last two books* You know, I would pay good money to see Chiaki's FACE when he finds out Naoe and Takaya are finally sleeping together.
Chiaki: *doesn't find out that, or at least not yet, but DOES find out that Naoe ditched the Uesugi to chase Kagetora to Shikoku*
Chiaki: .....................................................
Chiaki: What, Naoe? Naoe who went and became the new commander? THAT Naoe?
Chiaki: Oh my god, that is the best thing I have ever heard EVER. LOL! LOL LOL LOL.
Shikanosuke: O___o;
Me: XDDD
I need to do something productive like grocery shopping or pick my shoes up from Shinjuku or even update LJ about something that is not Mirage of Blaze, but I don't feel like it. *shifty*
ETA: Omg, KUUKAI IS JAPAN'S ELVIS! Also, way to make Buddhist monks seem really sinister.
On a almost TOTALLY unrelated topic (related only because it's on my Naoe/Takaya playlist), the guy from Cheap Trick sounds ridiculously like Gerard Way to me when he's talking in the opening to the song. Maybe it's a New Jersey accent.

Date: 2008-09-11 03:58 am (UTC)I don't know, actually. I sometimes skim ahead in the book I'm on when there's a horrible cliff hanger and I need to know for my own sanity if Takaya and Naoe will EVER end up in the same scene again or whatever, but I've avoided spoilers from other sources. I assume he must, though, since Naoe and Takaya totally just ignored the presence of the rest of the Red Whale officers to have fortifying hugs and THEY managed to figure it out. (While going, O______O)
Chiaki found out about the New Uesugi before he died and was incredibly pissed off about it. He felt betrayed on his own behalf by Kenshin, but he also seemed to feel kind of betrayed on Kagetora's behalf, and he had just spent 2 years bullying Takaya into keeping it together in his own special way (during the period from the end of book 11, where Naoe dies, to the end of the arc in book 19 where the old and new Uesugi go head to head), which is even more why I think he needs to see a psychiatrist when it comes to Kagetora. Nagahide has now decided he needs to defeat him. Also, the reason he joined Oda was because he was so pissed off at the Uesugi.
It's hard to tell whether part of the reason he's laughing is because he is glad for Kagetora that Naoe chose him over the Uesugi, or if it's just that that's so TYPICAL of Naoe, or what. I think it's a combination of factors. Nagahide does not like to admit that he might actually like anyone, especially not if their name starts with Kage and ends with tora. XD
