Random things from uni that amuse me
Mar. 13th, 2009 12:09 am1. Teaching Japanese. During the break, one of the girls was talking about how she emailed a male Japanese friend in English and called him (name)-darling, and how he emailed back saying, hello, Amelia-darling-- can I use that word? and she was totally lost for how to respond. We were all debating the circumstances in which a guy can call someone darling, and just after we'd moved on from that topic, our lecturer came back and said, oh, by the way guys, I forgot to turn the recording off, sorry.
All: ....................
Amelia: NOOOOOOO!
2. Property. I just love how sometimes cases start seriously contemplating these really ridiculous questions and it actually MATTERS to the outcome. The one that particularly made me snigger this time was the all-important issue of whether a boat buried underground for several hundred years could be classified as a mineral. *g*
3. Japanese Law & Society. There are groups of politicians called zoku, lit. "tribe".
Lecturer: So you've got these tribes of politicians...
Me: .... PFFFFT.
4. JL&S. On the topic of whether there are too many lawyers in the West, particularly America, or too few in Japan...
Lecturer: Maybe you don't need or WANT that many lawyers. Perhaps there needs to be a cull of lawyers.
Me: *thinks of recent kangaroo cull* ... are they going to take us out back and shoot us? XD
5. JL&S, for general Phoenix Wright hilarity. I suddenly feel I understand the court system in PW SO MUCH BETTER. Obviously it's still completely absurd and unrealistic when you have prosecutors whipping the judge, defence and witnesses and getting away with it, but the whole thing where prosecutors are part of the Ministry of Justice, how their status is perhaps even considered higher than judges, how lawyers are generally the ones that don't make the grade to be prosecutors or judges... it's interesting. Also, when I think about it, the new "juror system" in Apollo Justice would actually correspond to when Japan's Lay Assessor (quasi-juror) Act passed in terms of time frame of the game being released. The Act was passed in early 2004, although it doesn't come into effect until this May-- and Apollo Justice, or rather Gyakuten Saiban 4, came out at the end of that year. Curious, no?
... God I'm such a geek, I'm hitting post on this and going to go take my sad, sad law geekiness away to watch Mei-chan or read Skip Beat and be a shoujo geek instead. >>;
