Since his return to Hogwarts, Harry Potter had come to realise a number of things. The first of these realisations was that if he intended to become an Auror, he was going to have to work a lot, lot harder. This was only reinforced by the sobering if panic-inducing presence of Hermione, with whom Harry had spent the summer holidays and who would periodically descend into a bout of NEWT-based hysterics. Apparently, hysterics were contagious, and Harry had been studying maniacally ever since the start of the school year.
Another decision Harry had come to was that if he wanted to make a future career as an Auror, he was going to have to be a lot more sensible in the future. No more charging off heroically into the clutches of Voldemort without informing any adults, and the suchlike. He had the feeling that this sort of thing was likely to be frowned upon by superiors. On top of that, Harry felt that as a 17 year old, he was now practically an adult himself, and that as an adult, he really ought to behave calm and mature and things along those lines. Of course, any real adult knows that at the age of 17 one thinks themselves to be old and wise, and invariably this opinion is proof of their youth. Harry would not have been incredibly impressed had anyone attempted to inform him of this; luckily for him, they had yet to try.
Harry had also discovered that this same calm and mature behaviour resulted in all sorts of delightful benefits. Most noticeable of these, aside from the newfound respect of most teachers excluding Snape, was the reactions of his peers. In particular, those of his best friend, Ron, and his nemesis, Draco Malfoy. Both of them, when confronted by an infuriatingly reasonable and unexcitable Harry, found themselves lost and confused. At his silliest, Ron would never listen to logic, but being all but ignored appeared to take the wind out of his sails and force him to be rational. On the other hand, when Malfoy’s insults were met by complete serenity, he became disgruntled and put off. He generally gave up in disgust and went away looking bewildered and disorientated.
All in all, Harry found this new method of attack to be extremely satisfying.
